Q. What do bed bugs look like?
A. Adult bed bugs are about ¼-inch long and are reddish-brown. Although they may be difficult to find because they hide well, bed bugs are big enough to be seen with the naked eye. Bed bugs look similar to an apple seed in size and appearance.
Bed bugs’ eggs are pearly white and only 1mm long and they hatch after seven to 10 days. Immature bed bugs are also only 1mm long and are a pale, almost translucent colour.
Females can lay one to five eggs a day continuously, up to 300 a year, once they’re inseminated. The egg hatching up to the adult stage takes up to two months. It can take longer, depending on environment and food.
Q. How do I do a bed bug inspection?
A. See Bed Bugs the Pest page.
Q. How do I know if I have a bed bug bite?
A. Bed bug bites can be little red bumps. The bite can have red dot or scab in the middle and it may be inflamed or irritated. A small white welt may appear at each bite.
Q. What are bed bugs?
A. Bed bugs (or bedbugs) are small, elusive, and parasitic insects of the family Cimicidae. They live strictly by feeding on the blood of humans or warm-blooded animals.
Q. What is the bed bug lifecycle?
A. Bed bugs can go hungry for a week or more between blood meals and they can survive for many months without a blood meal. Bed bugs that feed regularly have a lifespan of 10 months, so we’re talking a lot of bed bugs laying a lot of eggs here.
Q. Will bed bug bites make me sick?
A. Toronto Public Health reports that there is no evidence that shows bed bugs transmit disease. Bed bug bites, however, can cause allergic reactions in some people similar to mosquito bites. Frequent scratching of the bite marks or picking the scabs can cause infections.
Q. Why don’t chemicals work to kill bed bugs?
A. Bed bugs are likely on the rise because they’re are becoming resistant to the pesticides used to kill them.
Changes in pest control around the country have resulted in a situation where some of the previous pesticides that had been effective have been removed from the market. Pesticide application alone will not kill bed bugs at all stages.
Compounding this problem is the stark reality that if the job is not done properly the first time, then the bed bugs will return and continue to spread. The problem will then become more serious and expensive when you consider that female bed bugs can lay about 300 eggs in their lifetime once they’re inseminated.
